Hit By Waves

Waves of nausea, waves of extreme tiredness and waves of emotions that I'm pregnant and still can't believe it....

It will be 7 weeks tomorrow and on Tuesday we'll have the first ultrasound. My wife and I are in shock still, but we talk about our growing baby and the future. Every week we take pictures of my very small belly and once we see the little heartbeat our shock will become reality. Sadly over the next few days she'll be in Las Vegas working and I'll be home sipping on ginger ale, eating crackers and wishing I didn't feel so tired.

A Long Time Coming

July 1, 2009 my wife and I make the decision to start a family. Because we were two women it was obvious our road to having a baby wouldn't be typical, but the outcome forced us down a path we ever had anticipated. The beginning battles seemed too easy; find insurance that covered maternity, check, find a donor, check, find an OB, check. All the necessary components fell into place. I was 27, healthy, in a committed relationship and ready for a baby. Before finding a fertility clinic to assist us with this process, our donor would come to our home and leave a sample. We used a process called artificial insemination. Fast forward 5 months. I'm not pregnant, our donor didn't work out and we were feeling defeated and tired. My full time job had ended and we soon realized it was time for a change and a break from the last few months. In January 2010 we found PRS (Pacific Reproductive Services) in Pasadena. It catered to lesbians and seemed to be the right fit for us. Through them we found an anonymous donor and began our process. After many months with them and many months of disappointing results, medications, low hormone levels and no baby, we found ourselves at a crossroads. After finding a new doctor and starting acupuncture we knew our journey was ready to end and a new chapter would begin. It's now November 2010 and last month our dreams came true. The blood test came back positive and after 4 urine tests they all said pregnant!!! Our lives over the past year and 3 months has been a roller coaster of emotions, financial strain and a test of our marriage. What may come over the next 8 months and beyond is unknown, but this blog will be a journal of the events that take place!
